McKeown's argument is that most of us are trying to do — and keep, and manage — too much, and that the answer isn't better time management but better selection. His phrase for it is "less but better": choosing fewer things deliberately, rather than trying to hold onto everything at once.

The book is really about decisions in general, not possessions specifically — but the underlying logic translates directly: if it isn't a clear yes, it's a no. Applied to a drawer full of "maybe" items, that's a genuinely useful lens.

Becker didn't set out to write about minimalism. He was cleaning out his garage one Saturday, complaining to a neighbour about how long it was taking, when she mentioned her own mother had never owned much and always seemed to have more time. That conversation is the whole book in miniature: less stuff, more room to actually live.

What separates this from a lot of decluttering advice is how ordinary it stays. Becker isn't asking anyone to live out of a duffel bag. He's asking a narrower question — does this thing add anything to my life, or has it just been sitting there long enough that removing it feels like a decision rather than an oversight?
